GCSE English Literature - Unseen Poetry

Key Information:

This session is designed to help students feel confident when faced with unseen poetry in the exam. It focuses on practical, repeatable strategies that work across all exam boards and helps students understand exactly what the examiners are looking for. The session is suitable for Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students, including those who find unseen poetry challenging or intimidating.

A key focus of the session is understanding the two types of unseen poetry exam questions and how to approach each one effectively.

  • Date -

    • Tuesday 17th February | 9:00am – 10:30am
      Unseen Poetry
Students will practise annotation techniques, planning strategies, and paragraph structures for both unseen poetry questions. Model approaches will be shared to show how high-level responses are built, helping students feel more confident and prepared for the exam.

    • Students will be guided through:

      Question 1: Single unseen poem
How to respond to a question based on one unseen poem. This includes how to read the poem efficiently, annotate for meaning and methods, select relevant quotations and structure a clear analytical response that addresses the question directly.

      Question 2: Comparative unseen poems
How to compare two unseen poems. Students will learn how to identify connections between poems, compare ideas, language and structure, and write a balanced response that moves confidently between both texts while meeting the assessment objectives.

The session also covers time management, common pitfalls and what examiners reward in higher-band answers.

  • Age Group - KS3 - Y9 to KS4 - Year 10 and Year 11
